First, children know my first job as their teacher: to keep them safe. This includes not only their physical safety, but their emotional safety as well. Safety is also the responsibility of the group. We are all responsible for keeping one another safe in these ways as well.
In our classroom, we 3 additional expectations that are a part of our Morning Message, every day:
Be Kind
Work Hard
Have Fun!
The order of these expectations is intentional, for it is my belief that one depends on the others. Being kind meets the most basic needs of belonging and connected-ness, which then allows children to do their best work. Should children do the first two, having fun is essentially an outcome - it is the result of being a good person and seeing the value of one's own effort.
