5th Grade Literacy

Our work in literacy will center around exploring ourselves and the world around us through multiple perspectives. Literacy will encompass reading, writing, discussing and wondering.

The current best research regarding the use of computers to do this work is becoming clearer in that ensuring that kids find multiple ways to access information and demonstrate their thinking without the aid of technology is to their benefit. Therefore, we will likely use our computers less than they have been in the past.

Here is an article that speaks to this.

This isn't to say that we won't be using technology to aid us in our literacy work. Rather, that technology will not be front and center in our day-to-day literacy time.

Kids will have time during our literacy block to read their own books and to meet and discuss books with their classmates. They will be getting time to journal, free read and write, study current events, respond to texts and do formal writing pieces throughout the year.

We will be using Magnetic Reading as a tool to help us gain reading skills and respond to literature in a more structured and standardized way to partner with our other writing and reading that carries more agency and freedom in their exploration and reflection.
