Fifth grade math takes big leaps forward in student's math understanding, moving toward the application of pre-requisite skills like multiplication and division in order to learn new concepts. Our units of study this year will center around multiplication and division, volume, fractions, decimals, orders of magnitude, 2D/3D shapes and coordinate grids.
Family Resources
We will be giving three benchmark assessments during the course of the year to track your child's progress in the iReady program. We use a math menu to give kids as much choice in their work as we can. Kids will have the opportunity to play math games such as Chess, Othello, Quorridor and others to help broaden their math thinking.
To support your child at home, don't hesitate to get in touch. You and I can meet and work together to find ways to engage your child in their math thinking that aligs as best we can with what we are doing here in school.
