First and Second Grade Reading

Reading is unlocked for kiddos in First and Second Grade. We know that children learn at different rates as their acquisition of skills vary greatly. Broadly speaking, first and second grade is where there is a transition from learning to read to reading to learn over their 2 years.

- We ensure that children have a solid phoneme (sound) to grapheme (letter) connection

- We level texts to ensure that children are reading books that are a "good fit" for them using a phonics based approach

- We meet in phonics skill based reading groups and individually to practice different skills. These can vary from learning letter names, decoding (using sound/word family knowledge to help figure out unfamiliar words) to comprehension strategies (what is happening in the story, the motives of characters, predictions, etc.)

We use word booklets at school to practice these words but you can look at the lists here as well as read some additional information. The kids are expected to know about 200 sight words by the time they leave second grade, though they usually end up knowing many, many more!

It is important that your child is reading or is read to every night. This could mean that some nights you read to them, other nights they read to you, that you do some shared reading, or some practice picture book reading (making the story from the pictures). Rich conversations about their reading are great boosts for emerging readers. It requires them to really think about what they are reading. We talk about creating a movie in their heads while they are reading. Often times, I'll stop the reading and ask kids about what their movie looks like. You'll be amazed what they come up with! Here is a link that talks about conversations you can have with your young reader:
